Description
A natural mammal vertebra, most likely deer (Odocoileus); the identification as deer is a best guess based on size and shape. It is a lumbar vertebra with long, curved side wings (transverse processes) and an open spinal canal, still attached to a piece of sacrum or pelvis bone that shows several smooth nerve openings (foramina) through the bone. The surface is weathered, with a creamy, chalky tone, darker brown staining, natural cracks and some rough, broken edges. The photos show the piece from the side, the front and from above, so you can see the spinal canal, the side wings and the holes in the fused bone.
