Description
A natural deer lower jaw (mandible), complete with both halves still joined at the chin. It was found naturally in the woods out of state (Oregon or Colorado) during field surveys, and it is naturally sun-dried with very little cleaning done. Identified as deer (Cervidae), best ID from tooth shape, not lab-confirmed. The cheek teeth have the crescent-shaped enamel ridges (selenodont teeth) of a cud-chewing browser, and the long, slender jaw with a gap between the front teeth and the cheek teeth is typical of deer.
This is a weathered, aged specimen. The bone is grey-brown, with darker grey streaks and staining along both jaw bodies, yellow-tan coloring toward the rear, and a crazed, slightly flaky surface in places from sun and weather. The two halves are still naturally joined at the chin, with a fine seam visible where they meet, and the front teeth (incisors) are in place. Both rows of cheek teeth are complete, with the crescent-shaped enamel ridges typical of deer, moderate and even wear, and dark staining in the enamel folds. Both rear branches are present, but the coronoid tips (the upper rear points) are chipped and worn and the rear edges are weathered. It has had very little cleaning, so it suits someone who wants to clean, degrease or whiten it themselves. The photos show the jaw from both sides, from above, a close-up of both tooth rows, the chin with the incisors, and the underside.
