While most believe language began with Humans (Homo sapiens), there is scientific suggestion that Homo erectus, an extinct early human species may have used a proto-language, or a primitive form of conversation around 2 million years ago. Humans, Homo Sapiens began habitation and occupation all around the globe, and were dominant during the Ice Ages. They survived two Ice Ages, while the last Ice Age was an extinction level event for most, if not all, megafauna. It is believed that language assisted humans in surviving the ice ages. Language allowed humans to share knowledge which assisted survival. This could have been simply as communicating edible plants, animal migrations, or new technologies. It is believed to be when spoken language as well as symbolic activities such as rituals, art, and personal adornment gave humans a shared sense of social identity, allowed them to band together, forge communities, and begin collaboration.
