Lot of 4 Cow Leg Bone Fragments – Natural Weathered Sun Dried Bovine Bones

$18.00

Lot of 4 natural broken leg bone fragments from a large hoofed mammal, best guess cow. Identified as cow (Bos taurus) leg bone pieces, a best guess from size, shape and density, not lab-confirmed; another large hoofed mammal is possible. The exact bone each piece came from is also a best guess. Includes a broken lower (distal) end of a long bone with a smooth groove and a jagged shaft break, a round flat growth cap (epiphysis) showing radiating spongy bone, a chunky knobby joint bone (possibly an ankle/tarsal bone or a femur end piece), and a split, splintery joint-end fragment. Heavily weathered grey-white, cracked, spongy bone exposed; naturally sun-dried, found in the woods out of state (Oregon or Colorado), very little cleaning. Largest piece approx. 5 x 4 x 3 in; total 1 lb 4.7 oz.

Description

A lot of 4 natural broken leg bone fragments from a large hoofed mammal, best guess cow. They were found naturally in the woods out of state (Oregon or Colorado) during field surveys, and they are naturally sun-dried with very little cleaning done. Identified as cow (Bos taurus) leg bone pieces, a best guess from size, shape and density, not lab-confirmed; another large hoofed mammal is possible. The exact bone each piece came from is also a best guess. The size and heavy, dense bone fit cattle, and the pieces look like broken ends of leg bones and a joint bone; the round disc is a growth cap, which comes loose from the bone in younger animals.

These are heavily weathered, aged pieces. The bone is weathered grey-white, with surface cracking from years of sun and weather and spongy inner bone exposed at the breaks. The largest piece is the broken lower end of a long bone, with a smooth groove on one face and a jagged, broken shaft. There is a round, flat, disc-shaped growth cap (epiphysis) whose face shows radiating spongy bone, a chunky, knobby joint bone that may be an ankle (tarsal) bone or a femur end piece, and a split, cracked, splintery joint-end fragment. They have had very little cleaning, so they keep their natural, rustic, sun-bleached character. The photos show all 4 pieces together from several angles.
