Description
A natural cow lumbar vertebra. It was found naturally in the woods out of state (Oregon or Colorado) during field surveys, and it is naturally sun-dried with very little cleaning done. This is a cow (Bos taurus) vertebra; the lumbar (lower back) position is a best ID from its shape. The long, flat, blade-like transverse processes (wings) sticking straight out to the sides are typical of the lumbar vertebrae of cattle.
This is a weathered, aged specimen. The bone is grey and sun-bleached, with a rough, weathered surface and tan staining on the end face of the body. It has a solid vertebral body with the spinal canal above it, long flat transverse processes (wings) reaching out to both sides, articular processes, and a short spinous process whose tip is broken off. Both wing tips are chipped or broken, and the end face of the body shows exposed spongy bone. It has had very little cleaning, so it suits someone who wants to clean, degrease or whiten it themselves. The photos show the vertebra from the front, the back, from above, and from the side at two angles.
