Description
A natural raccoon skull (Procyon lotor) with both lower jaw halves. It was found naturally in the woods out of state (Oregon or Colorado) during field surveys, and it is naturally sun-dried with very little cleaning done. Identified as raccoon, best ID from tooth and skull shape, not lab-confirmed. The remaining upper cheek teeth are broad, square and low-cusped (bunodont), made for an omnivore’s crushing bite rather than the blade-like shearing teeth of a fox, coyote or cat, and the skull has the rounded braincase and short snout typical of a raccoon.
This is an aged, uncleaned specimen. The cranium is grey-white with soil staining and dark specks, and the braincase has cracks running across the top and sides, with a weathered, crazed surface. Both cheekbone arches (zygomatic arches) have broken away, leaving only the stubs, and the snout tip is worn and damaged. Dirt is still packed into the roof of the mouth (palate). Most of the upper teeth are gone, including the upper canines and front teeth, but a few broad upper cheek teeth remain on both sides. Both lower jaw halves are included, cream to tan in color; each still has its canine and some cheek teeth, with empty sockets where other teeth were. The jaws are loose, not glued or assembled. Because it has had very little cleaning, it suits someone who wants to clean, degrease or whiten a skull themselves. The photos show the skull from the side, top, back, an angle and the underside, with both jaws laid out beside it, plus a close-up of the palate and remaining upper teeth.
