Description

A natural raccoon skull (Procyon lotor) with both lower jaw halves. It was found naturally in the woods out of state (Oregon or Colorado) during field surveys, and it is naturally sun-dried with very little cleaning done. Identified as raccoon, best ID from tooth and skull shape, not lab-confirmed. The upper back teeth are broad, square and low-cusped (bunodont), made for an omnivore’s crushing bite rather than the blade-like shearing teeth of a fox, coyote or cat, and the skull has the rounded braincase and short snout typical of a raccoon. The skull seams (sutures) are still open across the top of the braincase, which suggests a young adult.

This is an aged specimen. The cranium is clean, white to cream and lightly weathered, with the seams open along the top of the braincase and both cheekbone arches intact. The broad, square upper molars and several upper premolars are still in place; one side is missing some premolars, leaving empty sockets. Both canines have fallen out, and most of the small front teeth (incisors) are gone. Both lower jaw halves are included and still hold several cheek teeth, with empty sockets where the canines and other teeth were; they show some darker staining near the hinge. There is light speckling from the ground and a fine natural crack along the roof of the mouth. The jaws are loose, not glued or assembled. The photos show the skull from the top, the side, an angle and the underside (palate and teeth), with both jaws laid out beside it.
